Infinity mirror effect Rechargeable & touch-sensitive A simple touch is all it takes for the cube to open into a luminous abyss. The QUANTA hypercube lamp combines LED-lit acrylic edges within a 95 × 95 × 95 mm volume and a set of multilayer mirrors that multiply the light infinitely: one feels as if diving into a tunnel of nested cubes, like the projection of a tesseract, the four-dimensional cube that mathematicians have been trying to represent since the 19th century. Resting on its black base engraved with "INFINITY," it runs on a rechargeable battery, is operated by touch control, and features a dimmer to transition from a discreet nightlight to a desk centerpiece. Two atmospheres are offered: a crisp, graphic cool light, or a warmer, more enveloping amber light. Both an object of curiosity and an ambient lamp, QUANTA naturally finds its place among the Labo's luminous creations, between science, optical illusion, and contemporary design.

The hypercube and the infinity mirror illusion

A hypercube, or tesseract, is the four-dimensional equivalent of a cube: where a square becomes a cube by adding depth, a cube becomes a hypercube by adding an extra dimension that our eyes cannot see. Mathematicians of the late 19th century, followed by 20th-century artists, imagined representing it in three dimensions as one cube nested inside another, connected by their vertices. This image of nested cubes is exactly what is found in the lamp.

The depth effect is based on a simple optical principle: two reflecting surfaces placed face-to-face bounce light back and forth to each other. When one of them is partially reflective, some of the light escapes with each round trip, and the eye perceives a succession of reflections that become increasingly distant and dim. The LED edges are thus repeated in a tunnel that seems to extend far beyond the object's actual 95 mm. It is an illusion, but a perfectly physical one.

A window into another dimension

There are objects we look at, and others in which we lose ourselves. QUANTA belongs to the latter category. When turned off, it is a sober, transparent little cube resting on a black base. When turned on, it reveals a light architecture that extends inward, layer after layer, as if the cube contained a room larger than itself.

This ambiguity between the real object and the imaginary space is its entire charm. On a desk, it accompanies long evenings of work with a calm glow; on a bookshelf, it dialogues with science books and collectibles; in a bedroom, it becomes a contemplative nightlight. It reminds us that geometry, before being a school subject, is a source of wonder—and that a mathematical idea can also become a decorative object.

The choice of acrylic for the edges is not incidental: this material conducts LED light along its entire length, so that each edge appears luminous from end to end, with no visible hot spots. The black base, intentionally sober, fades away to give center stage to the luminous volume. The result is an object that is both minimalist and hypnotic, which one enjoys observing for a long time, letting the gaze slide from one reflection to the next.

Setting up in 4 steps

1
Charge the battery before first use via the 5V charging input, using a suitable USB cable and charger.
2
Place the lamp on a flat, stable surface, ideally in a dimly lit corner to fully enjoy the depth effect.
3
Touch the touch zone to turn the lamp on, then hold or repeat contact to adjust the intensity to your desired ambiance.
4
Observe from multiple angles: the light tunnel changes perspective depending on your position, from face-on to slightly overhead.

Cool light or warm light?

Criterion Cool light Warm light
Hue Crisp white Amber, golden
Ambiance Graphic, technological Warm, cozy
Recommended room Office, studio, workspace Living room, bedroom, library
Decor pairing Metal, glass, black and white Wood, leather, warm tones
Nightlight usage Possible, brighter light Especially suitable
Dimensions, control, battery Identical: 95 × 95 × 95 mm, touch-sensitive, rechargeable

Good to know: The impression of infinite depth is an optical effect produced by the repeated reflection of light between mirrors. The darker the room, the deeper the tunnel appears. In daylight, the effect remains visible but more discreet: it is in the evening that the lamp reveals its full character. Find other light and illusion objects in our light and levitation collection.

Tip: To keep reflections sharp, regularly dust the lamp with a dry, soft microfiber cloth. Avoid household products and abrasive cloths that could scratch the acrylic. Placed in front of a dark wall, it gains even more contrast.

Ambiance tip: In the evening, turn off the overhead light and leave QUANTA as the only light source nearby, set to low intensity. The internal reflections become more numerous and legible, and the tunnel effect reaches its full depth.

Frequently asked questions

How does the infinite depth effect work?

The effect relies on a classic optical principle. Inside the cube, multilayer mirrors face each other: light emitted by the LED edges bounces from one to the other, and with each round trip, a portion exits toward your eye. You then perceive a succession of reflections, each smaller and more distant than the last, creating a tunnel of cubes sinking into the heart of the object. The depth does not physically exist—the lamp is 95 mm per side—but the illusion is striking, especially in a dimly lit room. This interplay of nested reflections evokes the representation of a hypercube.

What is a hypercube?

A hypercube, also called a tesseract, is the extension of a cube into a fourth spatial dimension. Just as a cube is formed by six squares, a hypercube is formed by eight cubes. Since we cannot directly perceive four dimensions, it is most often represented by its three-dimensional projection: a small cube placed inside a larger one, with their vertices connected. The QUANTA lamp is inspired by this image, offering luminous cubes that seem to nest indefinitely. It is a poetic evocation of a mathematical concept, not a rigorous geometric representation.

What is the difference between cool light and warm light?

Both variants share exactly the same format, touch control, and battery: only the lighting shade changes. The cool light offers a crisp white, graphic rendering that matches contemporary interiors, materials like glass or metal, and suits an office well. The warm light diffuses a softer, more enveloping amber hue, ideal for a living room, bedroom, or near a wooden bookcase. If you are hesitant, think about the room where the lamp will be placed and the atmosphere you are looking for in the evening, when it is most often turned on.

How is the lamp recharged?

The lamp incorporates a 3.7V rechargeable battery that charges under a voltage of 5V, i.e., with a standard USB-type charger. We recommend a full charge before first use, then recharging the lamp when the brightness fades. The exact battery life is not communicated by the manufacturer: it naturally depends on the chosen intensity, as dimmed lighting consumes less than maximum brightness. While charging, place the lamp on an clear surface, away from any heat source, and unplug it once charging is finished.

Can the light intensity be adjusted?

Yes. The lamp features a touch control associated with a dimmer: a simple touch turns it on or off, and the same area serves to modulate brightness. You can transition from a nightlight glow, which is very soft, to more assertive decorative lighting that accentuates the depth effect. The power remains modest, less than 5 W: QUANTA is not intended to light an entire room, but to create an ambient light point. It is precisely this measured light that highlights the play of mirrors and the tunnel of cubes.

Where should I place the QUANTA lamp?

Thanks to its 95 mm side format and integrated battery, the lamp can be placed almost anywhere: on a desk, nightstand, entryway console, or library shelf. To best enjoy the illusion, choose a spot where ambient light can be dimmed in the evening, and place it at eye level or slightly below, to peer into the tunnel of cubes. A dark background behind it enhances the contrast. Avoid windowsills exposed to direct sunlight, as well as humid rooms like the bathroom.

How do I maintain the lamp?

Maintenance is very simple. Turn off the lamp, then dust it with a dry, soft microfiber cloth, gently focusing on the faces where dust might dim the reflections. Do not use household products, alcohol, or abrasive sponges: acrylic scratches more easily than glass, and marks would be visible in the mirror setup. Never submerge the lamp in water and do not attempt to open it, as it contains a battery and electronic components. Kept away from heat and moisture, it will long retain the brilliance of its infinite effect.
