Everything you need to know

Anti-stress object Time & Weather Placed on a desk, this liquid hourglass turns a few moments of waiting into a small hypnotic spectacle. Inside a transparent plastic diabolo-shaped body, sealed with two black caps, a colored liquid emerges as a stream and then as drops, slowly moving through a clear liquid to pile up in a cone at the bottom of the chamber. Simply turn it over and the fall begins again, over and over. Compact, measuring 116.5 mm high, 64.5 mm wide, and 23.5 mm thick, it fits perfectly next to a keyboard, on a nightstand, or on a bookshelf. Three shades are available: red, green, and blue. Often called an oil timer or drip hourglass, we see it primarily as a break-time companion—an object to turn over mindlessly during a call, while thinking, or to encourage slower breathing. Without batteries, screens, or the slightest noise, it serves as a reminder that a very simple object is enough to soothe the mind and rest the eyes.

Why does the liquid fall in drops?

The drip hourglass relies on a simple phenomenon: two liquids that do not mix and have different densities. The heavier colored liquid descends through the transparent liquid due to gravity, while buoyancy and the viscosity of the medium slow its fall. As it passes through the constriction, surface tension tends to close the colored stream, causing it to fragment into more or less regular drops that slide one after the other toward the bottom.

Once at the bottom, the drops land on each other, forming that characteristic small conical mound before gradually gathering. Turning the object over simply reverses the top and bottom: the colored liquid ends up on top and resumes its descent. The principle is the same as that of the sand hourglass, used in Europe since the Middle Ages, but here sand is replaced by a fluid, giving the movement its particularly slow and fluid quality.

Rain in the palm of your hand

There are objects you buy for their utility, and others you keep for how they make you feel. This liquid hourglass clearly belongs to the second category. It doesn't ring, doesn't flash, and demands no attention: it simply waits for you to turn it over. And at that moment, something happens. The colored liquid hesitates at the edge of the constriction, stretches into a fragile thread, then breaks into drops that descend unhurriedly, like a rain shower seen in slow motion through a window.

It is precisely this slowness that makes it charming. In a day punctuated by notifications, it offers a parenthesis of a few moments, a time measured not in minutes but in breaths. Some turn it during a call, others at the end of a meeting, and some in the evening to let the pressure subside. Its diabolo shape, black caps, and transparency give it a look that is both graphic and discreet, fitting just as well in a contemporary office as in a warmer interior. A modest object, but one that often becomes indispensable.

How to use it

1
Choose its location. Place the hourglass on a flat, stable surface, within reach, ideally where light passes through the liquid.
2
Turn it over with a flick. Hold it by the caps and gently tip it: the colored liquid ends up on top and begins to flow.
3
Observe the fall. The stream turns into drops that pass through the clear liquid and accumulate in a cone in the lower part.
4
Repeat as you like. Once the colored liquid has collected at the bottom, turn the hourglass over again to restart the cycle.

Drip hourglass or bubble hourglass?

Le Labo offers several liquid hourglasses with very different personalities. This comparison helps you choose between this compact model and our glass bubble hourglass, two pieces you will find in our Time & Weather collection.

Criteria Drip liquid hourglass Glass bubble hourglass
Body material Transparent plastic (PVC) Transparent glass
Format 116.5 × 64.5 × 23.5 mm, flattened diabolo shape 8 × 20 cm
Visual effect Colored stream fragmenting into drops, forming a cone Translucent bubbles sliding through a colored liquid
Colors Red, green, blue Blue, purple, pink, transparent
Primary use Desk anti-stress object, for daily use Contemplative decorative object
Visual presence Discreet, fits near a keyboard More prominent, decorative piece
Operation Gravity, battery-free Gravity, battery-free

Good to know: the flow duration is not provided by the manufacturer. This liquid hourglass is therefore primarily an object of contemplation and relaxation, not a precision timer. The size and regularity of the drops may vary from one turn to the next, which is precisely what makes each fall slightly different from the previous one.

Tip: place it in front of a soft light source, a window during the day or a desk lamp in the evening. The contrast between the colored drops and the clear liquid will stand out all the more. If a few drops remain stuck after the fall, wait a moment before turning it over: the next cycle will be even clearer.

Precautions: decorative object recommended for ages 14 and up; it is not a toy. Never attempt to remove the caps or open the hourglass, and do not put the liquid in your mouth. Avoid drops and shocks, which could crack the plastic body, and keep it away from sources of intense heat. In case of leakage, clean with a cloth and do not allow the liquid to come into contact with your eyes.

A gift idea that feels good

Small, original, and immediately appreciated, this liquid hourglass is an ideal gift for a colleague leaving or joining, a friend always under pressure, a student in the middle of exam season, or a fan of scientific objects. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full flow take?

The manufacturer does not provide a flow duration for this liquid hourglass, and we prefer not to suggest an approximate figure. The pace depends on how the colored liquid fragments while passing through the constriction, and it can slightly vary from one turn to the next. This is why we present it as an object for relaxation and contemplation rather than a kitchen or sports timer. If you need to measure a precise time, a classic timer will be more suitable; this one is designed to mark a break, accompany a breath, or simply occupy your hands and gaze for a few moments.

How does a drip hourglass work?

It contains two liquids that do not mix: a colored liquid and a transparent liquid of different densities. When you turn the hourglass over, the heavier colored liquid ends up on top and descends through the clear liquid due to gravity. The viscosity of the medium slows its fall, and the surface tension fragments the stream into drops at the constriction. These drops then collect at the bottom and form a small cone. No mechanisms, no batteries: everything relies on fluid physics principles that can be observed with the naked eye, which also makes it a nice piece of scientific curiosity.

What colors are offered?

The hourglass is available in three colors: red, green, and blue. In all three cases, it is the liquid that falls in drops that is colored, while the background liquid remains transparent, creating a very legible contrast. Red offers the most vivid and graphic effect, green brings a fresh and vegetal note, and blue evokes a fine, calmer rain. The transparent plastic body and black caps are identical for all three versions. Simply choose the shade that best matches your desk or the person you wish to gift it to.

What are its exact dimensions?

The hourglass measures 116.5 mm high, 64.5 mm wide, and 23.5 mm thick. Its diabolo shape is quite flat, making it stable once placed and easy to hold when turning it over. It is a much more compact format than our 20 cm glass bubble hourglass: it fits easily next to a keyboard, on a narrow shelf, on a nightstand, or in a desk drawer. Its weight is not provided by the manufacturer, but it is a light object, designed to be handled daily without any particular constraint.

Is it suitable for children?

The manufacturer recommends this hourglass for use from age 14 and up. It is a decorative and anti-stress object, not a toy: it contains liquids that must not be ingested or come into contact with the eyes, and the plastic body can crack in the event of a fall or violent shock. For an teenager, however, it can become a welcome study companion—a way to take a break between two exercises. If younger children live under the same roof, keep it out of their reach and let them observe it in your presence rather than handling it alone.

How to maintain and preserve it?

Maintenance is minimal: a soft, dry cloth or one very slightly dampened is enough to remove dust and fingerprints from the transparent plastic. Avoid abrasive products or solvents, which could dull or scratch the surface. Never attempt to open the hourglass or remove the caps: the liquid is designed to stay sealed. To preserve the appearance of the liquid and the body, keep it away from sources of intense heat and avoid leaving it in direct sunlight behind a window for long periods. Finally, handle it gently and always place it on a stable surface to limit the risk of it falling.

What is the difference with the glass bubble hourglass?

Both objects belong to the same family of liquid hourglasses, but their effects and uses differ. This model is made of transparent plastic, is compact (116.5 mm high), and shows a colored liquid that falls in drops before forming a cone: it is an anti-stress object to keep on your desk and turn over often. The bubble hourglass is made of glass, larger (8 × 20 cm), and features translucent bubbles that slide through a colored liquid: it plays more of a decorative role. Both work by simple gravity, without batteries. You will find both in our Time & Weather selection.
