All you need to know

Glows in the dark 13 colors NOCTUA phosphorescent paint transforms an ordinary object into a small light source as soon as the room gets dark. This water-based paint, available in 20 g bottles, absorbs light from the sun, a lamp, or a UV lamp, then emits a soft glow in the dark. It can be applied with a brush to craft materials such as paper, cardboard, wood, stone, glass, plastic, or canvas. It is available in 13 glow colors, from green to purple, including sky blue, orange, and red, and can be purchased individually. To start a collection, it is also available in packs of 2, 4, or 6 bottles, with you choosing the color of each bottle, including multiple bottles of the same color. Perfect for painting a starry ceiling in a bedroom, making a model, party decorations, or a physics experiment on light glow. The name of each color corresponds to the color of the glow in the dark: during the day, some paints may appear white or pastel.

Phosphorescence: light stored for later

A phosphorescent material contains pigments that absorb light energy and then slowly release it as a glow. When exposed to sunlight or a lamp, their electrons enter an "excited" state; in the dark, they gradually return to their initial state, emitting visible light. This delay is what distinguishes phosphorescence from fluorescence, which only glows while illuminated.

The practical result: the glow is brightest immediately after charging, then gradually fades. A light rich in ultraviolet rays (sunlight, UV lamp) charges the pigments faster than a standard light bulb, and the glow is all the more visible in complete darkness.

The NOCTUA spirit

Painting what is revealed at night

Noctua is Latin for owl, the bird that sees in the dark. NOCTUA paint embodies this idea: an object that seems ordinary in broad daylight and reveals another side once the lights go out.

A constellation on a bedroom ceiling, a butterfly on a garden stone, the outline of a light switch, the details of a model, or Halloween decorations: a few brushstrokes are all it takes. During the day, the paint discreetly recharges; in the evening, it takes over with a soft glow.

It's also a little home laboratory. By comparing an area charged in sunlight with another charged under a light bulb, you can observe phosphorescence with the naked eye, without complicated equipment.

Painting in 4 steps

1
Prepare the surface. It must be clean and dry. On a dark background, first apply a white undercoat for a brighter glow.
2
Mix and apply. Shake the bottle well, then paint with a brush in thin layers rather than one thick layer.
3
Apply multiple layers. Let it dry between coats and add two or three layers for a more intense glow.
4
Charge in light. Expose the paint to sunlight, a lamp, or a UV lamp, then turn off the light to see the glow.

Good to know: because the paint is water-based, it may thicken or freeze if the package travels in extreme cold. If so, let the bottle return to room temperature, then submerge the sealed bottle in hot water for a few minutes and shake it: it will regain its texture. To charge the paint faster, a small pocket UV lamp works very well, and it will also make the LUCIOLE yooperlite glow.

Tip: the glow of phosphorescent paint is always most visible in complete darkness and after a long charge. For a starry ceiling, paint dots of different sizes: the larger ones will glow longer and add depth to the sky.

Precautions for use: paint intended for crafts and decoration. Do not ingest, do not apply to the skin or to objects that may be placed in the mouth, and avoid contact with the eyes. Keep out of reach of young children; use by a child must be supervised by an adult. Close the bottle tightly after use and store it away from freezing temperatures and heat. The color name corresponds to the glow in the dark; the daytime shade may be different.

A creative gift that lights up at night

Available in packs of 4 or 6, NOCTUA is an original creative gift for a birthday or Christmas: for a teenager who wants to decorate their room, a parent who likes crafting with their children, a model maker, or a craft enthusiast. Give it with a brush and an idea: a starry ceiling to paint together.

To extend the exploration of light, pair it with a fluorescent stone, a science lamp, or another item from the Labo collection.

Frequently asked questions

How does paint that glows in the dark work?

NOCTUA paint contains phosphorescent pigments. When exposed to light, they absorb energy and then slowly release it as a visible glow in the dark. There are no batteries or electricity: the paint simply recharges each time it is exposed to sunlight, a lamp, or a UV lamp. The glow is brightest immediately after charging, then gradually fades. It can then be recharged as many times as needed, each time it is exposed to light again.

How long does the paint glow?

The duration of the glow depends on several factors: the intensity and duration of the charge, the thickness of the paint, the color chosen, and the darkness of the room. Charging in sunlight or under a UV lamp produces a brighter glow than a standard light bulb, and several thin layers will glow longer than a single layer. Like all phosphorescent paint, the glow fades over time after the light is turned off; simply expose it again to recharge it.

What does a pack of 2, 4, or 6 contain?

Each pack contains 2, 4, or 6 bottles of 20 g, and you choose the color of each bottle from the options that appear once the pack is selected. The same color can be chosen multiple times: six bottles of green for a large starry ceiling, or a mix of blues and purples for a marine decoration—you create the palette for your project. For a single color, the “Individual” format is sufficient: you can add several to your cart.

What surfaces can it be applied to?

NOCTUA can be applied with a brush to most craft surfaces: paper, cardboard, wood, stone, glass, canvas, plastic, or plaster. The surface must be clean, dry, and degreased. On a dark or transparent surface, a white undercoat significantly enhances the glow. For an object that is handled often or exposed outdoors, a clear varnish applied after drying protects the paint. It is not intended for the skin, clothing, or objects that come into contact with food.

Why does the color look different during the day?

The name of each color corresponds to the glow in the dark, meaning what you will see once the lights go out. During the day, the paint has a different, often paler shade: several colors appear white or pastel in the light and only reveal their true color in the dark. This is the very principle of phosphorescence: what glows at night is not necessarily the color you see during the day. To avoid surprises, rely on the name of the color you choose.

Is it suitable for children?

NOCTUA is a water-based craft paint. It can be used during family activities under adult supervision. It must not be ingested or applied to the skin, and it must be kept out of reach of young children. Protect the table with newspaper, wear suitable clothing, and wash your hands after use. Clean the brushes with water before the paint dries. Store the tightly closed bottles out of reach once the activity is finished.

Is it a good gift idea?

Yes, it is an unusual creative gift. A pack of 4 or 6 lets you start a project right away: a starry ceiling, party decorations, a model, or painted stones. It is suitable for a birthday or Christmas, for a teenager, a craft enthusiast, or a parent who likes creating with their children. For a more scientific gift, pair it with a LUCIOLE fluorescent stone or an item from the Light & levitation collection.
