Everything you need to know
UV Fluorescence Raw stone In daylight, it's a gray, almost unremarkable pebble. Turn off the light, turn on an ultraviolet lamp, and the stone is suddenly covered in glowing orange dots and veins, like embers. LUCIOLE offers you raw yooperlite, a syenite rich in fluorescent sodalite that has become one of the most astonishing mineralogical curiosities of recent years. Each stone is natural and unpolished, unique in its shape and the luminous pattern it reveals under UV light. Four formats are available: one piece measuring about 3 to 4 cm to discover the phenomenon, or a 200g, 400g, or 500g pack to fill a display case, a bowl, a decorative aquarium, or to use in a science workshop. An object that fascinates both children and adults, and offers a very concrete way to discover a very real physical phenomenon: fluorescence.

Why does yooperlite light up?
Yooperlite is a syenite, an igneous rock composed mainly of feldspar, which contains grains of sodalite, a sodium and aluminum silicate containing chlorine. Some sodalites are fluorescent: when they receive ultraviolet radiation, invisible to the human eye, they absorb this light and re-emit it almost instantly in the visible spectrum, here in shades of orange to yellow. As soon as the lamp is turned off, the emission ceases: that is the difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence.
These stones were discovered on the beaches of Lake Superior, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where the locals call themselves "Yoopers": hence their name. Sodalite fluorescence is most pronounced under a long-wave UV lamp, around 365 nm. Each stone reveals a different pattern, depending on the distribution of fluorescent grains within the rock.
Why you will love it
Embers on the shore of a lake
For a long time, these gray pebbles were walked over without a second glance. All it took was a walker strolling along a beach of Lake Superior at night, an ultraviolet lamp in hand, to reveal what no one had seen: stones speckled with orange glows, like embers fallen onto the sand. The phenomenon made headlines worldwide, and within a few years, yooperlite became a must-have for collectors.
LUCIOLE pays tribute to this moment of discovery. By day, the stone is discreet and blends into a bowl of pebbles. By night, under the beam of a UV lamp, it transforms into a miniature starry sky, where every grain of sodalite becomes a spark.
It naturally finds its place in mineral displays, on the desks of curious minds, and in the rooms of science-loving children, as well as in decorative aquariums and UV-lit terrariums, where its orange glows create a striking setting.

Good to know: the UV lamp visible in the photos is not provided. Without ultraviolet light, yooperlite appears as a gray to gray-beige stone, sometimes speckled: this is perfectly normal. This is a natural raw stone: the intensity and distribution of the fluorescence vary from one stone to another, and the number of stones in a pack depends on their size. We present these stones as yooperlite, without being able to guarantee their exact collection site. A small amount of yooperlite is also available in our assortment of raw collectible minerals.
Tip: to photograph the fluorescence, place the stone in total darkness, illuminate it at an angle with the 365 nm lamp, and use the night mode or a slightly longer exposure on your phone, placed on a stable surface. For an even more beautiful effect, lightly dampen the stone: the wet surface accentuates the contrasts, just like on a beach.

Precautions: when using a UV lamp, never look directly at the source and do not direct the beam toward your own eyes, those of a child, or an animal; prolonged exposure can be harmful to the eyes and skin. Children should use the lamp under adult supervision. The stones are small objects: keep them out of reach of young children (risk of ingestion) and do not put them in your mouth. Some edges may be irregular.
A gift that makes eyes sparkle
For a science-loving child, a mystery-loving teen, a mineral collector, or an aquarist in search of original decor, LUCIOLE is a gift that is as surprising as it is educational. Give one stone for the pleasure of discovery, or a full pack for a family or classroom workshop. Consider adding a small 365 nm UV lamp so the effect is immediate upon opening.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is yooperlite?
Yooperlite is the name given to a syenite, an igneous rock rich in feldspar, which contains grains of fluorescent sodalite. It was noticed on the shores of Lake Superior, on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA, whose inhabitants are nicknamed "Yoopers." In daylight, it looks like a simple gray pebble; under an ultraviolet lamp, the sodalite lights up in orange-yellow. Therefore, it is not a mineral species in its own right, but a rock whose interest lies in its fluorescence. We do not guarantee the exact collection site of the stones offered here.
Is the UV lamp included?
No, the UV lamp is not included: the one that appears in some photos is only used to demonstrate the effect. To observe fluorescence, you need a long-wave ultraviolet lamp, ideally 365 nm. These small flashlights are easily found. The 395 nm models, which are more common, emit more visible violet light and often give a less distinct effect. The ideal way to use them is in a dark room. If you are giving the stone as a gift, consider providing a lamp at the same time: the discovery will be immediate and much more spectacular.
What is the difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence?
A fluorescent stone absorbs ultraviolet radiation and re-emits visible light only while it is being illuminated: as soon as you turn off the lamp, it returns to gray. A phosphorescent material, like some paints or self-adhesive stars, conversely continues to glow for a few seconds or minutes after the source is turned off. Yooperlite is fluorescent: it does not "charge" and does not glow on its own in the dark. This is what makes the experience so interesting, because one can clearly see that the emitted light depends directly on the UV illumination received.
How many stones are in a pack?
The packs are sold by weight: 200g, 400g, or 500g. The number of stones is therefore not fixed and depends on the size of the stones in the pack, which varies from one harvest to another. A pack may thus contain a few large stones and several smaller ones. The 1-piece format corresponds to a stone of approximately 3 to 4 cm. Since each stone is natural and raw, its appearance, shape, and fluorescence intensity differ: this is precisely what makes it interesting to compare several specimens under the lamp.
Can these stones be put in an aquarium?
The photos show yooperlite in aquarium decor, where its orange sparkles stand out beautifully under UV lighting. Before any immersion, we advise you to carefully rinse the stones in clean water, without soap or chemicals, to remove dust and residue. We do not have supplier information regarding the potential effect of these stones on water chemistry: for a populated aquarium, especially with sensitive species, monitor water parameters after adding them and seek advice from your usual specialist. In an empty aquarium or decorative terrarium, there is no particular issue with its use.
Is UV light dangerous?
Small hobby UV lamps can be used without difficulty by following a few simple rules: never look directly at the source, do not direct the beam toward anyone's eyes or an animal, and avoid prolonged skin exposure. Ultraviolet light is invisible, so the eye does not reflexively protect itself as it would against a bright light. Children must use the lamp under adult supervision. UV-filtering glasses can be useful for prolonged observations. The stone itself emits no radiation: it simply converts the received UV light into visible light.
How to maintain yooperlite?
Yooperlite is a robust rock for daily use. A rinse with clean water and air drying are enough to clean it; a soft brush can be used to remove dust lodged in the crevices. Avoid household products, acids, and detergents. Store the stones in a bowl, box, or display case, away from impacts, to prevent them from chipping. Fluorescence does not wear out over time: you can repeat the experience as many times as you like, the effect remains identical.
