Everything you need to know

Aerial viewHand-painted oil14 sizes

Imagine flying over a volcanic coast in the early morning. Before your eyes, the sea is nothing more than an anthracite expanse crossed by a thousand silver ripples, and the beach, of a deep matte black, cuts it off along a sinuous line. Between the two, two cream-colored streaks mark the surf. Sable Noir translates this image into a painting: a diagonal composition, almost entirely dark, where all the light is concentrated on those fine laced edges of foam that run from the upper right corner toward the bottom of the canvas. The contrast between the vibrant surface of the water, worked in small horizontal strokes, and the smooth mass of the sand creates a striking texture. This oil painting is handmade for each order, in fourteen sizes from 40 x 60 to 150 x 230 cm, and can be adapted to a custom dimension. A canvas for dark, cozy interiors that brings the ocean into the living room without a single trace of blue.

One composition, fourteen sizes

Sable Noir
Sable Noir
Rippled anthracite sea, two lines of cream foam, matte black beach.

Sable Noir is available in a single composition, ranging from 40 x 60 cm (€99.90) to 150 x 230 cm (€749.90). All our photos show it vertically, with the foam starting from the top right and joining the bottom left.

Reading the painting

Three materials for one shoreline

The canvas reads in three zones. At the top left, the sea: a very dark anthracite gray, enlivened with small, lighter horizontal strokes that imitate the shimmer of the swell seen from above. In the center, two lines of foam of a slightly golden cream white, applied in relief, irregular and branched, like the froth left by a retreating wave. At the bottom right, finally, the black sand, painted in a smooth, deep flat tint.

This diagonal organization gives momentum to an otherwise very tight palette. Oil paint allows for playing with sheens: the sea, more textured, catches the light; the sand, more matte, absorbs it. Depending on the room's lighting, the painting appears in turn almost monochrome or, conversely, highly contrasted.

Black, the color of atmosphere

Long reserved for details, black has established itself in contemporary decoration as an atmospheric color in its own right: anthracite walls, black joinery, charred wood, dark leathers. Sable Noir fits into this trend. Rather than brightening the room with color, it envelops it and gives it depth, while its lines of foam provide just enough light.

In our photos, the canvas inhabits very mineral interiors: an entryway with dark gray wood panels and a veined marble countertop, a quilted white living room with a sculptural black armchair, a gray slat wall above a bronze low cabinet, a dark niche near a bay window. It acts as a window open to a distant shore.

Successful hanging

1
Choose a light wall if you want strong contrast, or a dark one for a very enveloping tone-on-tone effect.
2
Provide side lighting or an adjustable wall lamp: it makes the sea shimmer and brings out the foam.
3
Select your size from the fourteen available, leaving space around the canvas to let it breathe.
4
Stretch it on a frame; its dark edges then allow it to be hung without a frame.

Sizes and uses

Range Sizes (cm) Where to install
Compact 40x60 · 50x70 · 60x80 · 60x90 Bedroom, office, hallway
Intermediate 70x100 · 80x120 · 80x140 Entryway, dining room
Large 90x150 · 90x180 · 100x160 · 120x180 Above a sofa or bed
Monumental 130x200 · 140x220 · 150x230 Loft, hall, large living room
A canvas painted for you: Sable Noir is made by hand once your order is confirmed. The tracing of the foam lines and the density of the sea's shimmer will inevitably vary slightly from the photos, making each copy a unique piece. This creation time is added to the shipping delay.
To go further: in a black-toned room, pair Sable Noir with warm materials—ecru linen, raw wood, patinated brass. They echo the cream hue of the foam and prevent the overall look from appearing too cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does Sable Noir represent?
The canvas shows a shoreline seen from the sky, like a photograph taken from a drone. In the top left, the sea appears as an anthracite expanse crossed by small light ripples. Two sinuous cream lines of foam mark the limit of the waves. In the bottom right, the black sand beach, typical of volcanic coasts, occupies a large area of deep black. The subject remains abstract enough to be read as such: some see a shoreline, others a fault line or a line of light in the night.
Is the canvas actually colorful?
No, and that is its originality. Despite the subject matter, Sable Noir relies on a nearly monochrome palette: black, anthracite, gray, and a touch of golden cream for the foam. There is no blue or turquoise. The richness comes from the textures and the contrasts of sheen between the shimmering sea, the matte sand, and the relief foam. If you are looking for a bright, blue sea, this canvas will not be the right choice; if you love elegant, dark interiors, it will blend in perfectly.
Which room should I install it in?
Sable Noir excels in spaces where you want a calm and enveloping atmosphere: a living room with gray or anthracite walls, a master bedroom, a cozy office, or an entryway with mineral materials. On a white wall, it creates a very graphic focal point; on a dark wall, it blends in tone-on-tone and reveals its nuances as the light changes. Simply avoid small, dimly lit rooms, where the dominant black might feel heavy; a supplementary light is enough to rebalance the whole.
What size should I choose?
With fourteen sizes available, you are bound to find the right one. For a bedroom or office, a 60 x 90 or 70 x 100 cm is enough to create a presence. Above a sofa or headboard, aim for sizes from 90 x 150 to 120 x 180 cm. For a loft, staircase, or hall, the monumental sizes from 130 x 200 to 150 x 230 cm turn the canvas into a true architectural element. Keep a margin of at least 20 cm on each side so the composition can breathe.
Can it be hung without a frame?
Yes, it is actually recommended. Once the canvas is stretched on a wooden frame by a framer, its dark composition stands on its own: the edges can be repainted black to extend the painting over the sides, creating a very contemporary effect. Note, however: the canvas is delivered without a frame or stretcher, so this step must be planned before hanging. If you prefer framing, a black or dark wood floater frame remains the most discreet and elegant solution.
Do the photos show different versions?
No, all the photos present the same composition, seen either alone or in different interiors. Two visuals even show the canvas flat from nearly the same angle. The differences you might perceive from one image to another come from the lighting of the staged settings. However, as your copy is hand-painted after ordering, the tracing of the foam lines and the distribution of reflections on the sea will show slight differences from the photos, a sign of an authentic work rather than a reproduction.
How to preserve such a dark painting?
Large black surfaces easily reveal dust. Regularly use a very soft feather duster or a large dry brush, without pressing, following the horizontal direction of the sea's strokes. Never use water, a damp cloth, or cleaning products. Also, avoid areas exposed to smoke, such as above a fireplace, which could dull the cream foam, and prefer a room with a stable temperature, away from radiators. Cared for in this way, the canvas will long retain its subtle contrasts between shiny and matte.
